The assimilation interview is a key step in the naturalization application. It is not a trap, but a check: your integration into French society. Here is how to approach it calmly.
What is the interview for?
The officer assesses your assimilation: sufficient command of French, knowledge of the rights and duties of a citizen, adherence to the values and principles of the Republic, and knowledge of French history, culture and society.

Since 2026, a separate civic exam (multiple-choice) has been added to the naturalization process; it checks this knowledge in a formalized way.
How to prepare well
Review the citizen’s handbook (livret du citoyen), practice on values and institutions, and be able to talk about your journey (arrival in France, work, family, plans). A good level of spoken French helps a lot: practice answering out loud.
On the day
Stay calm, sincere and consistent with your file. Bring the requested documents. The interview is a conversation: it is better to answer simply and honestly than to recite by heart.
