Lost or stolen residence permit: requesting a duplicate

Losing your residence permit, or having it stolen, does not cancel your right to reside — but you must react quickly and in the right order to obtain a duplicate. Here is how to proceed.
First step: report the loss or theft
In case of theft, file a complaint with the police. In case of loss, make a loss declaration. Carefully keep the receipt of this declaration: it will be required for the next steps.
Second step: request the duplicate
The duplicate application is usually made online via ANEF. You will need to provide the loss or theft declaration, proof of identity, proof of address and a photo. A tax stamp is due on delivery.
Your rights while you wait
Your right to reside is not called into question: it is the physical document that is remade. A temporary document (receipt or certificate) may be issued while you wait for the new permit. Keep it with you, especially in case of a check or travel.

Do not confuse a duplicate (the same permit remade identically) with a renewal (a new permit at expiry). If your permit was nearing its expiry date, it may be wiser to plan the renewal.
