TCF, TEF, DELF: which French test to choose?

TCF, TEF, DELF : quel test de français choisir ?

To prove your French level, several exams exist — but not all are accepted depending on your procedure. TCF, TEF, DELF/DALF: here is how to choose the right test and prepare well for it.

Choosing the wrong test means risking having your proof rejected and having to start all over. Before registering, check what is actually accepted for your procedure.

The TCF (Test de connaissance du français)

Issued by France Éducation international, the TCF is a widely recognized test. It comes in several versions, some specifically adapted to procedures foraccess to residence and nationality. It is one of the two tests accepted by the Ministry of the Interior for the resident card and naturalization.

The TEF (Test d’évaluation de français)

Issued by the CCI Paris Île-de-France, the TEF is the other test recognized by the Ministry of the Interior for these same procedures. Like the TCF, it comes in several versions; you must choose the one matching your goal.

Golden rule

For a resident card or naturalization, only the TCF and the TEF (in their dedicated version) are accepted. Check the version before paying.

The DELF and the DALF

The DELF (up to B2 level) and the DALF (C1, C2) are official diplomas valid for life. A DELF B2 permanently certifies the level required for nationality, with no expiry date — an advantage over tests, whose validity is limited in time.

Test or diploma: how to choose

Preparing well

Whatever the exam, practice the format (listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing), do mock tests and work on time management. A few weeks to a few months of preparation are often needed depending on the target level.

Frequently asked questions

Does the TCF have an expiry date?
Yes, tests like the TCF and TEF have a limited validity period. A diploma like the DELF/DALF, however, is valid for life.
Can I use a test taken abroad?
The TCF and TEF can be taken abroad at approved centers. What matters is the version of the test and its validity, not the country where it is taken.
Which test for a first multi-year card (A2)?
Here too, recognized tests and certain diplomas can prove the A2 level. Check the version matching the level and the procedure.
How long to prepare for a B2?
It depends on your starting point. Going from B1 to B2 often requires several months of regular work.
