After a first one-year card, the multi-year residence permit (CSP) offers valuable stability: fewer renewals, a life planned over several years. But since 2026, obtaining it involves two new steps. Here is what you need to know.
What is the multi-year permit?
It is a residence permit valid for 2 to 4 years, generally issued after a first year of lawful residence in France. Its duration depends on the basis: private and family life, employee, master’s or doctoral student, talent passport, etc.
The new conditions since 2026
Since 1 January 2026, the first issuance of a multi-year permit is subject to two requirements:
- A2 language level: proven by a French diploma (at least lower-secondary level), a recognized language test or diploma (DELF A2, TCF, TEF at A2 level or above), or an OFII certificate from the CIR training.
- Civic exam: 40 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes on republican values, institutions, history and life in society. The pass mark is 32 correct answers out of 40.
Note: these two conditions only apply to the first issuance of the multi-year permit, not to renewals.
How long is it valid?
The duration ranges from 2 to 4 years depending on your situation. The multi-year permit is a step toward the 10-year resident card and, where applicable, naturalization.
How to apply
The application is usually made online via ANEF, with the supporting documents matching your basis of stay, proof of the A2 level and success in the civic exam. Plan several months ahead to avoid any interruption of rights.
