The 2026 civic exam: what to know and how to prepare

2026 NEWSCivic exam

A major new feature of 2026: passing a civic exam is now required for several residence procedures and for naturalization. What does this exam involve and how do you prepare for it? A complete overview.

What is the civic exam?

The civic exam aims to check knowledge of the history, culture, institutions and values of French society. It complements the language-level requirement and is part of the strengthening of integration conditions provided for by the reform.

Which procedures are concerned?

Since the 1st January 2026, the civic exam is required in particular for:

  • the issuance of a first multi-year residence permit ;
  • the issuance of a resident card ;
  • naturalization.

How does the test work?

The exam takes the form of a 40-question multiple-choice test, split into several broad themes (history, institutions, life in society, values of the Republic…). You must obtain at least 80% correct answers, i.e. 32 out of 40, to pass it. The test is taken at an approved center.

How to prepare well?

Preparation is based on reviewing the key milestones of French history and institutions, as well as regular practice with the multiple-choice format. Practicing on typical questions and filling in your thematic gaps makes the difference on exam day.

Mastering the language also makes it easier to understand the questions: preparing your French level (A2, B1 or B2 depending on the procedure) in parallel is a real asset. Our French-language courses can help you with this.
