Family reunification allows a foreign national settled in France to bring over their spouse and minor children. The procedure was strengthened by the law of 26 January 2024. Here are the conditions, the application and the timelines to know in 2026.
Who can apply for family reunification?
You can benefit from it if you have been residing legally in France for at least 18 months (a period extended by the 2024 reform) and you hold a residence permit valid for at least one year. Family reunification concerns the adult spouse and minor children.
The resources condition
You must demonstrate stable and sufficient resources, assessed on average over the last 12 months. As a guide (2026 scale): around €1,823 net per month for a family of 2 or 3 people, more beyond that. The RSA and family allowances are not taken into account: what counts is notably your earned income and pensions.
The housing condition
You must have suitable housing for the size of your family: a minimum floor area (around 16 m² for a couple, increased per additional person) and decent housing (water, electricity, heating, sanitation).
The application and procedure
The application is filed with theOFII (French Office for Immigration and Integration). The application includes in particular your proof of identity, residence, resources, housing and the civil-status records of the family members. After review, the prefect issues the decision.
The timelines to expect
The decision must in principle be issued within 6 months of filing a complete application, but actual times can be longer depending on the department. Anticipating and filing a complete application is therefore decisive.
