French level required in 2026: A2, B1 or B2 depending on your procedure

FRENCH LANGUAGESpeaking French

Since the 1st January 2026, proving a certified level of French has become an essential condition for many residence and nationality procedures. But which level for which procedure? Here is a clear guide.

Why French has become decisive

The reform from the law of 26 January 2024 and its implementing decrees raised the language requirements. From now on, the language level is no longer a mere formality: it directly determines the issuance of your permit or the acquisition of nationality.

A2, B1, B2: which level for your procedure?

  • A2 level — required for a first multi-year residence permit. A2 corresponds to the ability to understand and express oneself in simple everyday situations.
  • B1 level — required for the resident card (10-year permit). B1 lets you get by in most everyday situations and express a point of view.
  • B2 level — required for naturalization. B2 requires advanced mastery: understanding complex texts and expressing oneself clearly and in a structured way.

How to prove your level?

The required level is evidenced by a French diploma, a French-as-a-foreign-language diploma (DELF/DALF) or a recognized test such as the TCF or the TEF, in their “Integration, Residence, Nationality” (IRN) version. These exams are taken in approved centers.

Don’t forget the civic exam

Beyond language, a civic exam (a 40-question multiple-choice test, 80% pass required) is now required for the multi-year residence permit, the resident card and naturalization. It covers the history, culture and values of French society.

How to prepare effectively

Reaching the right level and passing the exam requires targeted preparation. It is better to assess your actual level beforehand, then follow training suited to your target (A2, B1 or B2) and practice the exact format of the TCF/TEF exams.
