Renewing a residence permit is a sensitive step: an application filed too late or incomplete can lead to a loss of rights. Here are the steps, the documents to prepare and the deadlines to anticipate to secure your procedure.
When to file your renewal application?
The renewal application must in principle be filed within the two to four months before the expiry of your permit. Anticipating is essential: if you are late, you risk ending up without a valid permit, with consequences for your job, your travel or your benefits.
The main documents to prepare
The documents vary depending on the basis of your permit (work, private and family life, studies…), but generally include:
- an identity document (passport) and your current residence permit;
- recent proof of address;
- supporting documents related to the basis of your stay (employment contract, payslips, proof of cohabitation, school enrollment…);
- regulation identity photographs;
- the required forms and, where applicable, payment of the fees.
The procedure, step by step
The application is most often made online, via theANEF (Digital Administration for Foreigners in France), or at the prefecture depending on the case. After filing a complete application, you may be issued a receipt (récépissé) : it lets you prove that your stay is legal while awaiting the decision.
The deadlines to anticipate
Processing times vary greatly depending on the prefecture and the period. It is not uncommon for several months to pass between filing and the decision. Hence the importance of filing an application that is complete and filed early.
