For many people, studying in France means a long-stay student visa and going through the Études en France platform. Enrollment, supporting documents, resources: the complete path so you don’t miss a thing.
The long-stay study visa lets you pursue a course in France beyond a few months. For many countries, the application first goes through the procedure “Études en France”.
The “Études en France” procedure
If your country falls under this procedure, you create an online file, present your study project and apply to courses. An interview may be arranged. This is a step prior to the visa application.
The main conditions
- An admission or pre-enrollment at an institution.
- Sufficient resources to live and study (a minimum monthly amount is generally required).
- Accommodation and suitable insurance cover.
- A consistent project in line with your background.
Proof of resources and the consistency of the study project are often decisive for obtaining the visa.
From visa to student residence permit
The long-stay student visa often takes the form of a VLS-TS, to be validated after arrival. In subsequent years, you apply for the renewal of the student permit, by demonstrating the genuine and serious nature of your studies (attendance, progress).
Working while studying
Student status allows limited paid work (within an annual cap on hours). It is a supplement, not full-time employment: an excessive workload can jeopardize the renewal.
After graduation
Once you have graduated, several routes exist: change of status toward work, talent passport, or schemes for recent graduates. It is best to plan this transition before the student permit expires.
