Receipt and extension certificate: your rights

Legalist By Legalist · Updated 24 June 2026 · 4 min read
Récépissé et attestation de prolongation : vos droits

While your application is being processed, a temporary document maintains your rights. But you still need to understand what it actually allows. Receipt, extension certificate: the complete rundown.

Between filing your application and the authorities’ decision, you are not “undocumented”: a temporary document covers this period. Understanding it well avoids a lot of worry.

The application receipt

The receipt is issued when your file is registered and deemed complete. It certifies that your application is being processed and, in many cases, maintains your right to reside — and to work if your permit allowed it.

The detail that matters

Read carefully the wording on the receipt: it indicates whether or not it authorizes work. Not all receipts grant the same rights.

The processing extension certificate

With the digitalization via theANEF, an extension certificate can be generated automatically when processing extends beyond your permit’s expiry. It extends the validity of your rights until the decision is made.

What these documents do not always allow

Beware of travel : a receipt or a certificate does not always guarantee a trouble-free return, especially outside the Schengen area. Before any trip, check your situation precisely.

What to do if the document expires?

If your receipt or certificate is nearing its end without a decision, request its renewal before the deadline. Never let a period pass without a valid document: that is what creates gaps in your rights.

Keep a record of everything

Keep a copy of every document, filing receipt and exchange with the authorities. If things get stuck, this evidence is valuable for asserting your rights.

Frequently asked questions

Are the receipt and the certificate the same thing?
They are two similar temporary documents. The receipt certifies the application in progress; the extension certificate, generated via ANEF, extends your rights when processing goes beyond the permit’s expiry.
Do all receipts authorize work?
No. The right to work depends on the wording on the document and on your original permit. Read your receipt carefully.
Can I travel with a receipt?
It is risky, especially for returning from outside the Schengen area. Check your situation before any trip.
My temporary document expires soon, what should I do?
Request its renewal before the deadline. Never remain without a valid document during processing.
