COMING TO FRANCELong-stay visa

Do you live abroad and want to settle in France for more than three months? The long-stay visa is the first step. But you still have to choose the right visa for your project. Here is how to find your way.

Short-stay or long-stay visa?

The short-stay visa (type C, known as “Schengen”) allows a stay of up to 90 days over 180 days: it is suitable for tourism or visits. For long-term settlement (work, studies, family), you need a long-stay visa (type D), often serving as a residence permit (VLS-TS).

Which long-stay visa for which project?

  • Work : employee visa, temporary worker, “Talent Passport”… depending on your contract and profile.
  • Studies : student visa, upon proof of enrollment at an institution.
  • Family : spouse-of-a-French-national visa, family reunification, or joining a relative with legal status.
  • Visitor : to reside without carrying out any activity, subject to resources and insurance conditions.

The supporting documents to prepare

Beyond the passport and the application form, the documents vary depending on the basis: proof of resources, accommodation, insurance, employment contract or school enrollment, civil-status records… A consistent and complete application clearly increases your chances.

Where and how to apply?

The application is generally filed at the French consulate or a service-provider center (TLS, VFS) in your country of residence, after completing the online form. Timelines vary by country and period: it is advisable to plan ahead.

After arriving in France

Depending on the visa, an online validation of the VLS-TS or a residence permit application may be necessary in the first months after your arrival. Do not neglect this step, essential to remain in a legal situation.
